Black students settle discrimination lawsuit against school district
Three families have settled a lawsuit that included allegations of racial discrimination by the University Place School District. It's crazy to still see discrimination like this still happen in the World we live in today. The school was called Curtis High School.The lawsuit was first filed in 2015. In legal documents, the plaintiffs, who are African American, say they were subjected to racial name-calling discriminatory, grading practices and other forms of harassment. According to documents filed by the students’ attorneys describe that they had a toxic environment, where they say other students regularly called them “the n-word,” and that the three boys in the school had to focus “on surviving each and every school day without having a mental or emotional reaction." According to statistics under ten percent of the students at the school were black. With all this going on the students reported it took a tool on their grades and lead to anxiety. This case did not stand well in court and led to the school district losing the case and having to pay a hefty fine. They payed the three students and their families with a total of $450,000 dollars. This lawsuit was a major case and showed how discrimination now a days will cost you a lot of problems and lawsuits.
